The dish may have originated in Belgium, but these twelve cafes give the sweet and crunchy waffle a Melbourne twist

The beautifully designed AU79 in Abbotsford offers diners a Bombe Alaska Waffle which consists of a Belgium waffle with yuzu and orange gel, passionfruit curd, raspberry sauce, seasonal fruits, Italian meringue and ice cream. Bowery to Williamsburg
American eatery Bowery to Williamsburg offers southern fried chicken waffles with spiced butter, chipotle dressing and maple syrup, vanilla berry, or the Elvis, Grilled banana, whipped peanut butter mousse, smoked bacon, pure maple syrup. Cumulus Up
Andrew McConnell's famous Duck Waffle is a must-try item on any visit to Cumulus Up, the inner-city wine bar / diner located above Flinders Lane stalwart, Cumulus, which recently celebrated 10 years of service. La Petite Creperie
Self-proclaimed arrogantly French La Petite Creperie started out as a small kiosk operating on Swanston Street, the crepes and waffles quickly became a hit with local workers and passers by unable to resist the aroma of sweet sticky eggs and vanilla. The business now includes three further kiosks. Swanston Street, (opposite Town Hall) and QV Square.

Time & Place

Nordic Canteen
With waffles available all day at this Phillip Island canteen, visitors will be able to get their waffle on while waiting for the sun to set and penguins to arrive. The Sweet Meadow Cafe
It calls itself a plant-based health bar, focusing on a vegan menu for health-conscious visitors... but one could be forgiven for assuming these delicious-looking vanilla waffles with berries, housemade ice-cream, chia jam, almond flakes and maple syrup - would sit firmly in the guilty pleasure category.
