Discover and honour our Victorian military history

/ 25 Sep 2017
The Goulburn River Valley region, in the heart of Victoria, has a rich military history consisting of countless stories of bravery and sacrifice.

Visitors can now follow in the footsteps of these incredible war heroes by discovering the new Military Touring Route, which honours those who served in a 334km round trip across Euroa, Benalla, Shepparton, Tatura, and Murchison.

The journey begins in Seymour, only 1.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne, at the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk where visitors can honour the 60,000 plus courageous men and women who served in Australia’s most divisive war. A wall of emotive images displays the names of these veterans and the harrowing conflict they endured.

Next is the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park, located on part of Camp Seymour where guests can stroll through the park of what was once Victoria’s largest military training and staging facility until 1939.

The military route then proceeds through a plethora of war history including, RAAC Memorial & Army Tank Museum, Italian Ossario, Calder Woodburn Memorial Avenue, German War Cemetery, Tatura Irrigation & Wartime Camps Museum, Benalla Aviation Museum and Honouring Our Heroes Memorial.

Military aficionados can plan a pilgrimage along the moving Military Touring Route in the Goulburn River Valley region by visiting www.heartofvictoria.com.au/military-history. The interactive map will help plan an unforgettable visit to this historic region.
