Wineries you can stay at

The number of Australians visiting wineries rose by 16 per cent in the last year, according to Tourism Research Australia. And with the growing number of wineries offering up accommodation options, there are even more reasons to visit – and stay.

Mornington Peninsula

Jackalope Hotel’s debut property will open in the heart of Mornington Peninsula’s wine region in April. Its 46 rooms will be decked out with furniture by Melbourne designer Zuster and the floor to ceiling windows will connect guests with the rural surrounds. A seven-metre-tall namesake Jackalope sculpted by Melbourne artist, Emily Floyd will be sit at the entrance, a prelude to the stunning artwork featured throughout the hotel. The property will be complete with a 30-metre infinity pool overlooking the vines, a poolside pavilion for spa treatments or private dining, fine dining restaurant Doot Doot Doot, and cellar door Rare Hare, which will showcase the product of the property’s own working winery. 166 Balnarring Road, Merricks North, +61 3 9519 8900.

Port Phillip Estate offers luxury accommodation in six contemporary designed suites, all of which have spectacular vineyard and coastal views and private terraces from which to enjoy them. Set on a magnificent 30-acre estate amid gardens, lawns and a vineyard, Lindenderry at Red Hill has 40 guestrooms, each individually decorated, with spa baths and open fires in premium rooms. The three Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate provide views of both the property’s lake, and its vineyards. Each villa comprises a king-sized bedroom, well-equipped kitchen adjoining a dining area and expansive living room, as well as an authentic wood fire, deep spa bath and a barbecue on the deck. Polperro Villas is comprised of four beautifully styled, spacious studio apartments overlooking the property’s vineyard in the heart of Red Hill. Each villa features a king-sized bed, designer styling, an open fire place, a central spa bath and a private deck with vineyard views. Blue Range Estate Wines features four villas, on the property’s vineyard overlooking the entire panorama of the Mornington Peninsula from Port Phillip Bay to Bass Strait. High Country

Due for completion mid-2017, Mitchelton Hotel will sit alongside Mitchelton’s restaurant, its Ministry of Chocolate cafe and cellar door. Hide and Seek Winery sits on 40 hectares of bushland that spreads along the Goulburn River. The self-contained guest accommodation features two levels, and can sleep 16. Maygars Hill Winery sits on 20 acres, and the property’s three-bedroom cottage is nestled among the Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines, with views of the Strathbogie Ranges. Toms Cap Vineyard is a small, boutique winery surrounded by the forests of the Strezlecki Ranges, the ninety-mile beach at Woodside and the natural flora and fauna of the Tarra Bulga National Park. The property features 100 acres of rolling green paddocks with seven acres of vines; 20 acres of planted blue gums and four secluded cottages offering exclusive and award-winning accommodation. Basia Mille features luxury apartments, set among a vineyard and olive grove – and with its own nine-hole golf course, which overlooks Wilson’s Promontory and the islands of Bass Strait. Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula

Situated on 230 acres of lush coastal farmland, Oakdene combines a café, cellar door, restaurant and accommodation – all set among the property’s vineyards. Yarra Valley

Balgownie Estate boasts 69 guest suites, a restaurant, cellar door, day spa, tennis court and pool – surrounded by sweeping views of the Yarra Valley and the property’s extensive vineyard. Macedon Ranges

Cleveland Winery sits in the heart of the Macedon Ranges, with 55 rooms overlooking 100 acres of vineyard and farmland. Featured wines include Chardonnay, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Sauvignon Blanc and Sparkling, and the property has its own underground wine cellar, where guests can enjoy wine tastings or a regional tasting plate. 55 Shannons Road, Lancefield, +61 3 5429 9000.

The Murray

Cape Horn Vineyard is located on a sand hill wedged between the Murray and Goulburn Rivers. Wines on offer include Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Shiraz, Durif, Marsanne and Primitivo varieties, and the vineyard is also home to a five-bedroom villa with sweeping river or vineyard views from every aspect – and a cellar door on site. 489 Stewarts Bridge Road, Echuca, +61 3 5480 6013.

Cofield Wines recently introduced ‘Grapevine Glamping’, which features a fully set up glamping camp site among the vines. Each tent is fully equipped with board games, phone chargers, a mini bar, and even a kit for stargazing at night. Mount Pierrepoint Estate harvests Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris fruit, and offers guests the chance to stay in one of two suites, both of which overlook the extensive garden and a 14-acre vineyard – the perfect place for breakfast. Located at Mountainside Wines, a vineyard and winery at Warrak just north of Beaufort, The Blue House started life as the local post office. It was transported to the property and has been refurbished. It is a self-contained cottage with a queen bedroom, fully equipped kitchen and wood fire. The family-run Summerfield Winery is located at the heart of the Pyrenees Wine Region.
