Great Ocean Road
A popular spot with the locals, the Apollo Bay Seafood cafe offers a selection of seafood including generous servings of locally caught fish and chips, and memorable views. Further along the coast, The Wharf Commons is a new addition to Port Fairy’s food offering. With a selection of fish and chips as well as burgers, it is a great spot to sample the ‘catch of the day’ in this picturesque, historic seaside village. 29 Gipps Street, Port Fairy.
The tranquil seaside village of Port Albert is well known for its fresh seafood. Former professional fisherman Michael Hobson is behind the must-visit seafood restaurant Wildfish Port Albert which showcases local seafood, produce and wine in an elegant setting. Located on Australia’s largest network of inland waterways and somewhat of a mecca for boaties, fishermen and family holiday makers, it is no surprise that Lakes Entrance offers plenty of choice when it comes to fresh seafood. For fish n chips, visitors can take their pick from the catch of the day at Awesome Fish n Chips or Fishermens Own Omega 3! The latter is owned by the Lakes Entrance Fishing Co-op Limited and doubles as a fish monger, so patrons can choose from freshly caught fish cooked in or take away. The local tip: the prawns are a must.
Visitors heading to Phillip Island shouldn’t miss out on a meal from Pelican View – The San Remo Fisherman’s Co-operative, situated on the water’s edge just before the bridge to the island. Established in 1948, the San Remo’s Fisherman’s Co-op is an icon of San Remo which brings in fresh seafood daily. Visitors and locals can enjoy the day’s catch at the Pelican View family restaurant, overlooking the foreshore, and watch the pelicans being fed everyday at noon. Visitors can catch their own lunch at the Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm. The Portsea Hotel is a classic spot to enjoy fish and chips with amazing views across Port Phillip Bay.
