5 minutes with…Helen Marcou

/ 27 Mar 2018

What is your favourite place(s) to eat and the best place to have a cuppa?

Breakfast for me and my family involves a stroll down to Alimentari on Smith Street. Melbourne coffee at its best! For dinner I love Project 49 on Cambridge Street in Collingwood, Rocco Esposito brings Beechworth goodness to the heart of my hood in the inner city. Bar Lourinha for my city meet up with friends. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention Sonido for the best Columbian Arepas!

What is your favourite event/festival to go to?

Victoria is a mecca for music festivals, my favourite memories include watching the sunrise at Meredith Music Festival and I love the one stage, both Laneway Festival and Sugar Mountain Festival have along with a ridiculous amount of the best touring acts in the world and delicious treats. I can’t miss the Sidney Myer Music Bowl for a gig under the stars. For visitors that love the sticky carpet, a visit to the Tote, Old Bar, Gasometer Hotel and Corner Hotel is an absolute must!

The evening is rolling in, where is the best place to go for an pre-dinner stroll in the nature?

Down by the Yarra River, strolling through the grounds of the Abbotsford Convent and Collingwood  Children’s Farm, five minutes from home and the birds, bees, grass, dogs, trees and flowers are there in acres of bushland. You can always drop into Cam’s at the Convent for a perfect lunch or spritzer (served by some of Melbourne’s coolest musicians).

What is your favourite building?

MPavilion! A yearly gift to the people of Melbourne, from October to February. I can’t wait to see what architect Carme Pinos comes up with later this year. I’m looking forward to her vision that will provide a space for talks, music, communities and inclusion.

Help! My friend’s birthday is coming soon, what should I get/where can I get a nice gift?

I value experiences, tickets to a local gig with a beautiful meal beforehand. Last week Quincy (my partner for over 30 years!) surprised me with an in-store gig by artist Golden Syrup at Polyester Records and then a long, slow dinner at Napier Quarter. But for those that want to give more, Melbourne is the crème for handmade and coveted clothing and designer jewellery. Head to Gertrude Street for Rock Star catsuits from the one and only Alice Edgeley, Spacecraft Studios for hand silk screened cushions and linen. Made to order fashion from Nevada Duffy on Napier Street in Fitzroy, Gun Shy Design for Ru Paul’s favorite Faux furs, PrestonZly for handmade shoes and we are so lucky to have exceptional artists who create jewellery such as Julia deVille and Cass Partington.
