King Valley in the state’s North-East has become the biggest region outside of Italy in the acclaimed Italian varietal Prosecco, and a journey down Prosecco Road will initiate visitors into the history and multi-generations of families who have perfected the crisp bubbly drink.
Originating in the cool alpine climate of Veneto in north-east Italy, Prosecco is a light and lively sparkling wine with a dry finish and a fresh fruit flavour through the mid palate. King Valley is the first region to produce an Australian-made premium Prosecco. Growers at the King Valley in Victoria's High Country treat palates with the joy of crisp Mediterranean-inspired wines from their luscious vineyards overlooking the King River. Otto Dal Zotto planted the first Prosecco vines in the King Valley in 2000 and soon after five other King Valley winemakers have followed suit – Brown Brothers, Chrismont, Pizzini and Sam Miranda. All five have joined forces to create an exciting food and wine trail especially for lovers of the sparkling Italian white. Intimate tastings with the makers, savouring rustic Italian cuisine and conversations about the meaning of life over a game of bocce, are all stops along King Valley Prosecco Road.

HOW TO: King Valley is around three and a half hours drive from Melbourne. Wine tourists are advised to stay at least one night in the region to fully enjoy all that's on offer.
